$5M “For the Boys”

Len Scherock '59

Len Scherock '59

When alumnus Len Scherock '59 created a U of D Jesuit endowed scholarship fund in 2018, he asked that we call it the Leonard J. Scherock, M.D. '59 Endowed Scholarship Fund "For the Boys." The reason he chose this title was understandable. "If it wasn't for The High, I would be pumping gas or behind a garbage truck," he explained. He was always grateful how the school changed his life. Ultimately, it brought Len to the realization that he wanted to leave a legacy so other young men could experience the life-changing opportunity that he did.

Len had a deep appreciation for U of D Jesuit and his time here. While at The High he was involved in the Classical Club, Sodality, JETS, KBS, Physics Club and Cub Annual, of which he was a photographer. He credits the school for laying the foundation of his numerous lifetime achievements. He talked about the influence Jesuit Fathers Radloff, Dillon, Pilot and Sullivan had on him, as well as scholastic teachers Mr. Schapker, S.J. and Mr. Bourguignon, S.J. Len's gratitude to U of D Jesuit resulted in a $5,000,000 commitment, which will be one of the largest estate bequests in the school's history.

After graduating high school, Len attended Wayne State University School of Medicine. After earning his M.D. in 1967, Len was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War as a captain stationed in El Paso, Texas. After completing his radiology residency, he began his practice in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, where he worked for several decades as a double-board certified doctor in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.

Yearbook Club

1959 Cub Annual yearbook staff members: Len Scherock, Gail Gilbreath, John Crusoe and Art Boddie

Len was known as an avid gardener, landscaper, sailor, traveler and lover of cars. He also developed a passion for woodturning. He won five gold medals in the International Woodturners Competition held in England.

Len believed the formation of his path to success came back to his experience at The High. In 2018, Len started his scholarship with distributions from his retirement fund. Sadly, Len passed away on April 7, 2020. Because of his love for The High and his foresight to help others, his estate plan created a perpetual legacy "For the Boys."
