Terrence E. Keating ’56: A True ‘Man for Others’
Terrence “Terry” E. Keating ’56 exemplified what all young men of The High strive to be. He was a “Man for Others” and gave his life for the greater good.
Beginning in 1994, until his passing, Terry put his appreciation of U of D Jesuit into action by serving The High in various ways. His many contributions are immeasurable. Most notably, Terry was instrumental in developing the Planned Giving Program at U of D Jesuit. He helped bring in more than $25 million and nearly 250 planned gifts.
After graduating from U of D Jesuit in 1956, Terry attended the University of Notre Dame and the University of Detroit Law School. Terry enjoyed a rewarding career as a longtime practicing attorney and estate planner. During his career, Terry also held numerous positions at The High, including 14 years as a member of the faculty/staff, 19 years on the Board of Advisors, nine years on the Board of Directors and 12 years on various committees.
Terry was a well-deserving recipient of the Alumnus of the Year award in 2001. This award is presented to an alumnus who sets and achieves exemplary standards for himself personally and in his chosen fields.
Because of his love for The High and his foresight to help others, together with his beloved wife Noreen, he created the Keating Family Scholarship. Since 2008, this scholarship has been awarded to seven deserving students, ensuring that Terry’s legacy of being a “Man for Others” continues to live on.
Sadly, Terry passed away on July 29, 2022 and is survived by his wife Noreen and his sons Patrick ’85 and Kevin.
The epitome of a “Man for Others” is one who makes sure he helps everyone around him before he helps himself. Terry’s life and career journey reflected this spirit, and it is something we should all aspire to emulate.
